As many of you know, Jessica Browning Schavone, was diagnosed with a high-grade infiltrating glioma brain tumor at the end of 2023. The past few weeks have been a challenge for Jess and the family as there has been a lot of waiting and wondering between a hospital stay, scans, appointments, a biopsy, and molecular testing. Jess has started radiation treatments at Duke and will receive targeted immunotherapy after. The Angels Among Us 5K/Walk of HOPE supports fighters and survivors of brain tumors through research and education. Whether you plan to be in attendance of the 5K and/or Walk of HOPE or plan to cheer her on from afar, we appreciate you joining us in supporting Jess’ fight for HOPE!

The team name "Hakuna Matata" is from one of Cameron's favorite movies, and also Jessica’s favorite growing up…King King as she called it, The Lion King, which has been a staple of the household lately. As the song states, "it means 'no worries'." The phrase encourages us to enjoy life to the fullest and not worry about things we cannot control. This is the mantra Jess is showing us all is so important when facing the unknown!
With the outstanding care Jess has received from the cancer center from the Physicians all the way down to the greeter at the door in mind, this is wonderful way to help support the research and help find a cure for horrible disease.
These are some of the hardest working, sometimes behind the scenes, people and programs in the field of medicine.
