We want to share Richard’s journey as a message of hope and perseverance. On the day of my son Hunter’s 7th birthday, my husband Rich was diagnosed with a brain tumor. As we began to learn more, we were faced with the harsh reality: Rich’s tumor was a stage 111/1V gliobastoma, with only a 2-3% survival rate beyond five years.
Despite this, we never gave up hope. Rich had an awake craniotomy, removing the tumor only to have it regrow. However, with the help of Duke’s incredible team and a breakthrough treatment, Avastin, the cancer was eliminated. What they accomplished was a miracle. The cutting-edge medication and determination displayed by the team ultimately saved his life. No words can truly describe the appreciation our family has for Duke and the doctors.
Today, after many years, Rich is still cancer-free, watching our children grow and enjoying life. On Sundays, you may catch Rich going to church, cheering on his favorite football team with his son, or helping his daughter Summer to prepare for the school week and graduating high school. He also enjoys spending his free time with our German Shepherd Roxy, finding the best BOGOs at Publix, or seeing the newest movie. Truly he is the definition of a family man which we are incredibly proud and thankful for.
This fundraiser on October 20 celebrates hope and determination, as well as the doctors at Duke who made this possible. We’re forever grateful for the love of our friends, family, and the support of the Naples and Bonita communities.
Thank you so much and hope to see you at the event!
