Shane is 9 years old now just over 3 ½ years from his diagnosis in December of 2021. He has received monthly chemotherapy infusions through a port in his chest for over a year now and with the treatments he is given several nausea medications and steroids to help him better tolerate it. He has been given a three month "break" from chemo (Feb-April). His little body was developing some strong allergic reactions to the treatments, so fingers crossed the chemo stunted the tumor's growth enough to let him get stronger during this break for possible future treatments. We are holding our breath until his next MRI on April 25th...still hoping for a miracle.
EVERY DAY 13 KIDS ARE DIAGNOSED WITH BRAIN CANCER, which remains the leading cause of death by disease in children and remains the least funded. There’s a growing wave of hope fueled by advances in medical research and the determination of families and supporters like you. The goal is to find treatments that will work for our kids without destroying their quality of life.
WHY YOUR DONATIONS MATTER...
Research funding is essential to drive progress in understanding and treating childhood brain cancer. The fact that current outdated treatments are over 40 years old and primarily tailored to adults underscores the urgent need for new, child-specific approaches. Children are not simply smaller versions of adults, and their medical needs should be addressed accordingly.
Let's walk together in the ANGELS AMONG US WALK this April 26th! We look forward to walking with you among survivors and honoring the memories of those sweet children who were taken from this life way too soon. We are so lucky to live so close to Duke Hospital with its world-renowned pediatric cancer department. The team of professionals working with Shane are champions for his individual needs and care. Please, join us in supporting Duke in its groundbreaking research and advocacy for all our children by supporting our team and donating.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE WALKING WITH TEAM SHANE ON SATURDAY:
We are wearing the same blue/teal Team Shane shirts from last year. Some of you have red Team Shane shirts and that is fine too! If you don't have a Team Shane shirt and you can wear something in the blue/teal family or red that would be great.
