As we approach our 13th Linda Bare Pickin' on Cancer Pig Pickin', benefitting the Duke Cancer Center and the Tisch Brain Tumor Center, I find myself looking back with tremendous gratitude.
This started way back in 2012 as a backyard party to honor the memory of my mother while trying to make something good come out of the hardest thing we’d ever dealt with. Over the years, a rotating cast of characters has faithfully shown up year after year to make that dreadful time take on an entirely new meaning. At this point, the annual event holds similar standing in our house to the Christmas holidays. We know we’ll get to see and spend time with family and friends, who come and donate their time and money to make a difference in the lives of people we will likely never meet. And we are making a difference. The dollars we’ve raised have directly helped the Duke Cancer Center give hope to patients and families through their unending dedication to improve our understanding of the cancers they work to eradicate. They apply the knowledge gained with great passion and are always working towards the next breakthrough.
A few years ago, I decided that we’d call this chapter closed once we hit a total raised of $100,000.00 since our inception. To date, you have helped us raise almost $84,000 through our 2024 event. I’ve still got that goal in my heart and mind but realize that all good things must come to an end. Lucky number 13 will be the year we close the book on this event to bring a positive impact to the efforts of the folks at Tisch through the pig pickin', but it won’t be the end of our fight against brain cancer. We can’t wait to spend time with you again on June 14th.
Thank you all for your help getting us to this point. Thank you so much for all the fantastic memories that have come out of these events and stay tuned for what lies ahead as we consider new ways to continue to make a positive difference on this front!
