Team Jim-Bo: In Loving Memory of Jim Sopko

Jim-Bo, aka Daddy Sopko, aka Jim, was a beacon of strength, humor, and love for his family and friends. Diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2004, he faced it head-on with surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 2005 to remove the tumor, followed by further treatment at Duke in 2010. Against the odds, Jim celebrated his incredible 20th anniversary of brain surgery in January 2025, surrounded by those he cherished most. Just a few months later, in April 2025, he joined us for the Angels Among Us event at Duke, walking with purpose and inspiring everyone around him.

Tragically, Jim passed away unexpectedly on August 4, 2025, at the age of 70. Though his loss leaves an irreplaceable void, we celebrate his remarkable life—a life filled with laughter, family adventures, and unwavering determination. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather (“Papa” to his grandkids), and friend, Jim taught us all to live fully, even in the face of challenges. His spirit lives on in the stories we share, the memories we hold, and the hope he ignited for others battling brain tumors.

This team was created for him, and now we carry it forward in his honor. All donations to Team Jim-Bo support groundbreaking research and clinical trials at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke—work that gave Jim extra years and continues to bring hope to families like ours. In lieu of flowers, as noted in his obituary, we kindly ask that you consider a contribution here to celebrate his legacy and help destroy brain tumors for good.

Join us in remembering Jim-Bo: Donate today, share your stories, or walk with us in future events. Together, we’re turning grief into action and keeping his fighting spirit alive.
