Meghan's Team
Meghan's Why:
When I was in elementary school, my best friend was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. I would visit her weekly in the hospital, which was not a children’s hospital, so it did not meet the needs of the children or help them feel like children while they were there. An adaptive tricycle can help children be kids while in a hospital. For instance, a 7-year-old boy, who was struggling with mobility after a brain tumor, can regain his strength and confidence by using an adaptive tricycle. Having an adaptive tricycle can make the long, stressful, and frustrating process of strengthening their mobility not feel like exercise. Instead, it makes them feel like they are at play, making a hospital stay much better. An adaptive tricycle can help kids get excited about rehab to get better faster and feel like just a kid again.
Meghan is fundraising for…
an Adaptive Tricycle.
How It Will Help Duke Children's Patients
Children become weak for various reasons (a brain tumor, trauma, seizures, cancer, etc), but they all need physical therapy to help get their strength back. Physical therapy can be scary and very challenging for kids. However, an adaptive tricycle allows them to work hard to reach their goals while having fun. This not only improves their current rehabilitation experience but also sets a foundation for a healthier future, making it a worthwhile investment in pediatric care.
