Jim's Team
Jim's Why:
The Duke Children’s NICU team saved my twins’ lives. Watching the Duke team care for infants that were barely bigger than my two hands put together always blew me away. My twins had to be put on breathing tubes because they were struggling to breathe. I can’t imagine having to insert a breathing tube into an infant that small. That’s why I am raising money for a Neoview video laryngoscope. This item can assist the care team in properly placing the breathing tube because it has a video monitor to guide them. Amazing!
Jim is fundraising for…
a Neoview video laryngoscope for the Duke Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
How It Will Help Duke Children's Patients
The Duke Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which cares for newborn babies who need extra support due to being born prematurely or born with a medical condition that needs monitoring and treatment, is hoping to obtain a Neoview. The Neoview is a laryngoscope, a thin, tube-shaped medical device used to examine the larynx. The average full-term newborn has an airway that is about half the diameter of a pencil; babies who are born prematurely have airways that are even smaller than that. The Neoview is special because it has a video camera attached to it and makes it possible to see a baby’s airway on a screen so that the breathing tube can be inserted in the right location, minimizing complications or harm to the baby. An added benefit of this tool is that it allows the team to look at the procedure taking place in real time so instructors can guide learners and give real-time feedback. Everyone on the team can see the procedure being performed and confirm that it was done in the best and safest way possible.
