MIX 101.5 WRAL-FM Spirit of Hope Challenge for Duke Children's

Kyle's Team

Kyle's Why:

Inclusion is a necessity for all of us. It allows for emotional growth, the feeling of being valued and most importantly, loved. I remember being at a Carolina Hurricanes event several years ago and the organization made it a point to include a sensory truck so every child that showed up felt included. It was a beautiful thing to see kids having a great time at an event they otherwise might’ve felt excluded. A sensory cart for complex care is such an important tool for emotional development for children. From social skills to cognitive development to feeling included, a sensory experience is an absolute must and necessary tool for growth. I want all kids and individuals to feel like everyone else — valued and loved. The Radiothon to me is a symbol of hope. A symbol of love and care that the hospital gives to families and patients every single day. I show up for Duke Children’s because I want other families to get to the other side of their struggle. I want them to know that the strength of Duke Children’s and the care, love and support of the staff will help them create future memories with their kids. For me to play a small role in continuing to raise money that helps create future miracles for families, miracles they deserve, means everything to me.

Complex Care Caring Cart

Kyle is fundraising for…

a Caring Cart for the Complex Care Clinic.

How It Will Help Duke Children's Patients

Children seen by Duke’s outpatient Complex Care Clinic have unique needs: all are on at least one medical assistive device such as a breathing tube, a feeding tube, all see at least five specialist clinicians (often more), nearly all have had multiple inpatient stays during a calendar year, and many are non-speaking. On Complex Care Clinic days, the team works to schedule multiple appointments in the same timeframe, reducing travel time and scheduling stress for the families. These days are long and can be difficult for the families. A supply cart to hold medical and sensory supplies unique to these childrenand activities for siblings who accompany them to their appointments is integral to ensuring that long clinic days with multiple specialty appointments go smoothly. Complex care patients are some of the most fragile patients treated at Duke Children’s. Help us care for their entire well-being, the emotional and social well-being of their families, and the hard work of the Complex Care Clinic team by supporting the Caring Cart project.
