Join me in supporting Season of Hope and MIX 101.5 Radiothon for Duke Children's
My youngest daughter, Violet, was born with an open cleft lip and palate. We adopted her when she was 17 months old from China and even before we traveled to China to finalize the adoption, the Duke Cleft team reviewed our material and gave amazing guidance and hope for what we might expect once home in the way of medical needs.
Violet attends annual clinic days with the Cleft team (which she has done for as long as she has been in the US) in which she sees several specialists in the course of a half day set of appointments. During her visit in 2020, she really was excited
about sharing some of her artwork and writing as she loves to create books. The books were about Violet with many self-portraits, but most of the content was about how she likes different aspects of the way she looks, her personality, and what she enjoys doing. The staff on the team really took the time to celebrate these with her and asked if she had ever thought about writing a book about her experience of her time in the clinic.
From that conversation, Violet went home and wrote four books within 24 hours, which I delivered within the week with Violet to the staff. From that point, the team identified a book that they really liked and explored the potential for Violet to actually write and publish a book. And ...over the course of many conversations...she was able to publish a book for other kids to know what it is like to go through the clinic! It is even on Amazon today!
Violet has gone through a number of surgeries, procedures, and medical appointments and this team has made the process of going through these experiences so positive. Since then, we have developed such rich relationships with the providers on this team and Violet has come to look forward to sharing about her growth and accomplishments. We love Duke Children's and the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team.
