Join me in supporting Season of Hope and MIX 101.5 Radiothon for Duke Children's
Our story started when Peyton was 2. We got a call from her daycare that said she was not feeling well and her face and legs were swollen and something was not right. I rushed to the daycare and took her to the urgent care. They could not find anything wrong and said she did not look swollen to them. When I got into to see her pediatrician, the doctor immediately knew what it was but needed to do a urine and blood test to confirm. He said he has only seen it one other time in his career.
Once the results were back, he referred us to Duke. On Oct 19, 2018, my husband and I went in to see Dr. Nagaraj with Peyton. He gave us a lot of information and it was a little overwhelming to be honest. They started her on medication to try and get her in remission. In Jan of 2019,
Peyton was not getting any better with home medications and was admitted to the hospital. We had to stay a few days while they did her infusion and could closely monitor her and try to get her numbers better. When we discharged we were still not in the clear and continued her medication at home.
Peyton did not improve and we had to go back into the hospital at the beginning of Feb 2019 to have a kidney biopsy. I was devastated knowing my baby would have to be put under. It took her a little while to wake up but we stayed by her side and had to stay a few more days. Since she was not going into remission, we had to set up home infusions for a couple of months.
In July of 2019, she had another relapse. This time she only had to do the prednisone at home and it corrected the issue. We were so excited not to have to go back to the hospital. In May 2021, we decided to try and wean her off her long term medicine she started in 2018. Her last medicine she has taken for her condition was August 31, 2021. We are excited that she has not had any relapses since 2019.
