Perry is a survivor of Wilm’s Tumor, a rare kidney cancer that mostly affects young kids. Perry was diagnosed in September 2021 when her doctors found a tumor in her right kidney. We had to make a decision on where to start treatment -- as soon as we met our Duke team, we knew we were in the right place. Our whole team, from oncologist to social workers to Child Life, treated us as though we were the only patient family they had for our entire year of treatment.
Perry had multiple inpatient stays due to intensive chemo, but at the end of her last stay, her nurses had a balloon and confetti parade for her as she was discharged. Perry finished treatment and rang the bell in August 2022, less than a year after she was diagnosed. She has quarterly scans to monitor her, but so far they have been clear. After five years of clear scans, she will be granted Survivorship.
Because of Duke Children's we have an incredibly healthy and beautiful little 7-year girl who is full of life and can continue living life normally the way it was before she was diagnosed.
