On May 1 2024 my GI doc discovered a tumor and some polyps in my colon via colonoscopy. As you can imagine, this was not something I was expecting at 42 years old and based on the symptoms I was having. Then the waiting game began…CT results, biopsy results, surgeon scheduling…luckily isolated to colon, not so lucky it is cancer.
2 surgeon opinions later, we went with a fantastic and amazing Duke colorectal surgeon. 5 weeks post recovery, I went onto 3 months of chemo and was finally in the clear in November!
I feel lucky and blessed to have had the support I did with my doctors and all medical staff at Duke as well as my friends and family that showed every day. Saying this, I'd like to raise awareness and increase research on colon cancer as it is affecting younger and younger people.
