My LMS story began in  August of 2023.  I had surgery to remove an unsuspicious but uncomfortable mass in my lower left abdomen.  When the pathology came back saying it was leiomyosarcoma, I was so unfamiliar with it I had to Google it just to know how to pronounce it.  Thankfully, the Duke Sarcoma Center was quickly engaged. After another surgery in September and in January an ablation procedure, I am doing fine.  It is not easy getting used to the roller coaster emotions associated with the 3 month scans, but I am healthy today and plan to stay that way. 

Sarcoma can affect anyone, all ages and genders. Each year approximately 10,000 patients are diagnosed with sarcoma. About 20% of those are leiomyosarcomas. Sarcomas demand specialized expertise in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation to maximize the quality of life after therapy. The Duke multi-disciplinary team has extensive experience and offers a collaborative approach to the treatment of this rare but serious disease. Research funding is limited but your support will allow Duke Cancer Institute to continue to push the boundaries of sarcoma treatment to one day find a cure.
