Tree of Hope Lighting Ceremony
About the Tree of Hope Lighting Ceremony
This cherished gathering invites patients, families, and caregivers to come together in a moment of reflection and connection. You’ll hear heartfelt messages of encouragement and resilience from those who have faced cancer and from the dedicated healthcare team who provide unwavering, compassionate care.
The Tree of Hope shines as a symbol of strength and unity, reminding us that no one faces cancer alone. Its glowing lights celebrate the enduring spirit of healing and remembrance.
The Tree of Hope Lighting Ceremony was founded by Rachel Schanberg, creator of the Duke Cancer Patient Support Program (DCPSP), and Nancy Weaver Emerson, a former Duke employee and cancer survivor in 1990. It is the longest-running event in Duke Cancer Institute history. The original mission still rings true today: while facing cancer is undeniably hard, access to high-quality, comprehensive care should never be. DCPSP continues to foster a community of support, walking alongside patients and their loved ones throughout their cancer journey.
