Nutrition and Exercise as Medicine

We are engaged in studies to improve patient outcomes using scientifically-based nutrition and exercise as “medicines” in patients to prevent and treat illness. We also are passionate about the use of exercise and nutrition to improve patient’s quality of life after illness.

We are passionate about the role of nutrition and exercise as therapy to treat, cure, and improve preparation/recovery from surgery, cancer, trauma, intensive care and other illness.

Illnesses like cancer, infections, being in ICU, and having surgery can lead to serious complications which include not only infections and death, but also significant loss of strength, endurance and the ability to live functional lives. We have improved patients ability to survive Illness and surgery but many people are never able to walk down the street with the people they love again, they cannot hold their children or grandchildren due to muscle weakness, and they are often too fatigued and weak to return to work for months to years.

How you can help:

Our Nutrition and Exercise studies bring much needed real research science to this area and have the potential to greatly improve the lives of people going through illnesses, surgeries and recovering from hospital and ICU stays. However, they do take a lot of resources and effort.

We have received funding for this work from the NIH and non-profit foundations. However, more funds are needed to support the development of new ideas or essential research infrastructure.
